2020 Local. Knowledge. Cabernet Sauvignon
When the confluence of time, place, and relationships presents a Cabernet opportunity; take it! Fruit from mature vines was crushed to open vats and fermented with the influence of wild yeast and hand plunging. Gently pressed, the wine was then matured in French barriques (10% new) for fourteen months. The result is inky, pure, and quintessentially Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon. Local. Knowledge. Enjoy the experience.
95 Points – The West Australian, by Paul Edwards
"This is a stonking good cabernet and while not cheap, it's a fraction of the price of super-premium reds emerging from Margaret River. The fruit purity and concentrated flavours speak loudly, but are framed in a taut, rippling medium frame. There's a distinct absence of chunky tannins and viscosity – by design – it works well. Instead, just pure essence of cabernet fruit and all its nuances. Cassis at the core with fragrant blackberry and juicy mulberry too. Hints of cocoa, bay and black olive add complexity. The acididty is compelling and reverberates across the palate long after you've finished tasting. Flavours linger for well over a minute. I can't think of many examples I'd enjoy more as a young wine – but will it age? Hard to say, but why would you want to save it when it drinks so well now."
94 Points – Halliday Wine Companion, by Erin Larkin
"This is pure. Saline. Inky. Lightweight, yet with gravitas. Detailed, with finesse. It carries on long after the wine has left the mouth. This wine is totally different from everything on the bench beside it. You can really taste the fruit, it isn't sullied by anything. it is crystalline, but shapely – quite a marvel. In Margaret River, there are some producers you can look to for a different perspective, that will show you a 'new way'. La Kooki is fast emerging as one of those, and this is a wine you could start with. In the words of Jay-Z, 'then we gon' keep it in the truest essence of [cabernet]' (he said hip hop. But he meant cabernet)."
93 Points – The Vintage Journal, by Andrew Caillard MW
"Medium-deep crimson. Intense blackcurrant, blueberry, bush-garrigue / sage aromas. Lovely sweet-fruited wine with deep-set cassis, blueberry fruits lacy / chalky tannins, very good mid palate inkiness and some savoury oak nuances. Very attractive mid-weight wine with pure fruits, elegant structure and linear freshness. 100% Cabernet. 2022 to 2028."
